Considering how much goodwill Linkin Park racked up in recent years, with their collabos with Jay-Z and their knack for inserting interesting snippets - a techno swirl here, a hip-hop groove there - into their workmanlike, broad-shouldered, hook-heavy rock, “What I’ve Done” (Warner Bros./Machine Shop) plays it way too safe. There’s no deviation from the well-worn formula of turned-up guitars, angst-ridden lyrics and Chester Bennington’s yearning yowls - no Mike Shinoda rap, no intricate rhythms.It’s as straightforward as they get and even more predictable, made even more ordinary now that armies of copycats seeking a slice of Linkin Park’s sales have diluted the band’s style further.They will need more than this to persuade people to buy the upcoming “Minutes to Midnight” album rather than screaming along to “Hybrid Theory” again.
